Bridging the Cultural Gap in South Asian Families
Wednesday, July 29
7:00pm - 8:30pm
The Christopher J. Killmurray Building
Gambatese RoomIn this workshop, Dr. Sudha Wadhwani will provide an overview of the challenges among South Asian families in balancing traditional expectations with the complexities of raising children in the US
As parents, we want our kids to thrive and succeed in all aspects of their lives… personally, socially, academically, and professionally. Dr. Wadhwani will share her experience in working with teens, young adults and college students, in order to assist parents in understanding the context of the current pressures our young people face and provide tools for bridging communication and creating a bi-cultural family system. She will provide strategies for raising our next generation to become confident, thriving adults, who are healthy and successful. Dr. Wadhwani will address topics of mental health stigma, managing the intergenerational cultural norms, and shifting to a strength-based approach to parenting. She will provide strategies for opening communication to meet your teen and young adult children where they are and creating a healthy relationship in which your teens and young adult children will feel more able to come to you when needed.
This workshop is presented by the South Asian Mental Health Initiative and Network. SAMHIN was formed in 2014 to address a broad range of mental health needs of the growing South Asian community in the United States, beginning with New Jersey. SAMHIN is a team of dedicated, multifaceted, determined, and passionate individuals from all walks of life with a strong desire to help uncover and fight mental illness in the South Asian community.
