Join the South Brunswick Historical Society online to learn the story of Billy Lee and local heroes who fought during the American Revolution.
William "Billy" Lee was a formerly enslaved man who served as George Washington's valet from 1768 to 1799, accompanying him throughout the Revolutionary War, managing his personal affairs, and attending to his everyday needs. He was regarded as a celebrity among soldiers and colleagues, joining Washington on hunting trips and political ventures, including during the First Continental Congress and his Presidency. Billy Lee was with Washington during his campaign through central New Jersey and likely passed through the earlier resemblances to today's South Brunswick Township.
As we celebrate Black History Month, this presentation will highlight the contributions of Billy Lee and other heroes who called South Brunswick home and fought in the Revolutionary War, such as John Brant and Henry Higbey. We look forward to sharing these stories with you!
